Easter 2011 Tenerife

Since the conquest of the Canary Islands and the foundation of their cities, social life in Tenerife has been strongly rooted in deep Christian feelings that tradition and spirituality have left an indelible mark on the culture of its inhabitants. Holy week is a sample of this character for centuries.

It is in San Cristóbal de La Laguna where more religious acts are concentrated since this city is the seat of the bishopric and the Nivariense diocese, but processions and liturgies are also held in other municipalities such as Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Güímar, Garachico and Los Realejos.

Adeje hosts one of the biggest spectacles for Passion Week with a cast re-enacting the lead up to the crucifixion through the streets of the town with an audience of thousands.

In these solemn celebrations, brotherhoods take 'steps' to the street to be venerated by the faithful. Many of the images are priceless carvings made by artisans artists and that may date from the 16th century.

Recently other municipalities staged also Holy week with realistic and detailed theatrical representations of Christ's passion. A celebration in which all the people is involved and which brings together each year to a greater number of visitors. This is the case of the municipality of Adeje and more recently in Candelaria.
